AFCAT: Selection Process

AFCAT Exam takes place twice a year. The online exam is conducted by the Indian Air Force.
The selection process of the AFCAT Exam comprises the following stages:
Stage 1:  AFCAT Written Exam is the only criteria for clearing the first stage for the Non-Technical candidates;
while AFCAT + EKT (Engineering Knowledge Test) for the Technical candidates
Stage 2:  Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) Interview
Stage 3:  Medical Test
The AFCAT EKT for technical candidates contains 50 questions for 150 marks with questions from Mechanical, Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics.

AFCAT Exam Pattern 2021

For all the candidates of the AFCAT, it is mandatory to appear in the written test. Also, the candidates who have applied for the technical posts need to appear in the Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT).

Important Points:

  1. Total Time Duration: 2 hours
  2. Number of Questions: 100
  3. Marking Criteria: +3 for each correct answer
  4. Negative Marking: -1 for each incorrect answer
  5. No marks for unattended questions.

AFCAT Syllabus

The standard of Mathematics will be of Matriculation level. The standard of other subjects is as per the graduation level of Indian Universities. The topics for each section have been listed for convenience. Candidates can go through the topics given for each subject to prepare well.

AFCAT Syllabus: General Awareness- This section tests the general knowledge of the candidates. The questions are designed on the basis of ongoing, current events in various fields around the world. About 20 questions are asked in this section.

AFCAT Syllabus EKT – Engineering Knowledge Test

AFCAT EKT is the exam that evaluates the engineering knowledge required for the technical branch. Students who aim to get into the technical branch have to apply and appear for EKT Exam.
AFCAT EKT is a 45-minute exam and is followed by AFCAT. Candidates are given half an hour window after which AFCAT EKT Exam takes place. The total duration for the AFCAT exam is 2 hours and the mode of examination is online.
The AFCAT EKT Exam Syllabus has a General engineering part that is based on the common topics of multiple branches of engineering. Also, based on the degree of the candidate, there are questions from the specialized part. 

Final Selection after Medical Test

Final Merit List: Indian Air Force (IAF) will select only those candidates who will secure the minimum qualifying marks separately in written examination and AFSB test as fixed by the IAF. Candidates will be placed in the order of merit on the basis of the total marks secured by them in the written examination and in the AFSB tests.

Training. Candidates recommended by the AFSBs and found medically fit by the appropriate medical establishment are detailed for training strictly on the basis of merit and availability of vacancies in various branches/ sub-branches.

(a) Date and Duration of Training: Training is scheduled to commence in the first week of January 2022 for all courses. The approximate duration of training for Flying and Ground Duty (Technical) Branches is 74 weeks and that of Ground Duty (Non-technical) Branches is 52 weeks at Air Force Training Establishments.

(b) Physical Conditioning: Prospective candidates are advised to keep themselves in good physical condition to adapt to physical training at AFA which encompasses running, swimming, rope climbing and other forms of physical training/conditioning in which they would undergo mandatory tests during training. Candidates are advised to keep themselves in good physical condition by following the under mentioned routine:-

1. Running: up to 4 Km in 15 minutes.

2. Skipping

3. Push-ups & Sit-ups: Minimum 20 each

4. Chin-ups: 08

5. Rope Climbing: 3 to 4 metres

6. Swimming (25 m)
